10 Tools Definitions

Ashet - referred in Scotland and Northern England as a shallow oval dish or large plate.
Bain-marie - a heated bath in cooking to heat food and keep warm without boiling.
Bolster (not a pillow) - a cold chisel to help break through hard materials by hand such as stone and brick and metal.
Cant hook - a traditional logging tool consisting of a wooden lever handle with a movable metal hook called a dog at one end.
Gimbal - a pivoted support that permits rotation of an object about an axis.
Hawk (not a bird) - a board about 13 inches square with a perpendicular handle fixed centrally on the reverse.
Karabiner - an oblong D-shaped metal ring with one spring-hinged side that is used in mountain climbing as a connector and to hold a freely running rope.
Sagger - a container used during the firing process to enclose or protect ware being fired inside a kiln.
Tenter - a frame on which cloth is stretched after having been milled so as to dry evenly without shrinking.
Twitch - a device that is used to restrain horses during various stressful situations such as veterinary treatment.
